Fun and Academics Shape Popular Village Learning Place Program

Margaret Brent enjoys a strong partnership with the Village Learning Place, which offers the Let’s Invest in Neighborhood Kids (LINK) afterschool and summer programs to students in pre-K through 8th grade. With a focus on academic and personal development, LINK instruction supplements the in-school reading and math curricula and also offers students enrichment opportunities in computer technology, art, debate and gardening.

I have been in the VLP’s after-school program since 2nd grade. In a typical day, we come to the cafeteria and sit and socialize. Then we go to the classroom and everyone gets to their jobs. My job is water for snack and the clipboard for signing in. After snack, we do math or some type of school subject. Then we work on a project, like debate, math or science. Every day we have at least one thing that EVERYONE in class thinks is fun, like math games.

Some of my best memories are of our LINK Halloween party, Spooky Harvest Night and the Spaghetti Disco, which is really like an old-school Halloween party with everyone in wacky costumes! Another of my favorite times was when middle school boys with good behavior all got to eat pizza and take a cab to First Mariner Arena to see a Monster Truck Show. We used math in the taxis so we didn’t get charged extra.

LINK is helping me meet my goals of scoring Advanced on the MSAs and keeping out of trouble and off the streets. LINK is a pretty fun and cool place to socialize and learn.
